PLAYING GOALS: WEEK 3 (APRIL 12 - APRIL 18)

Violin and viola Sight Reading Practice - 1

Work through 1-2 of these sight reading exercises every day as part of your practice routine. Always start by looking over the song and counting through the rhythms out loud first. Before you play, ask yourself these questions:
  • What is the key? What is my finger pattern for that key?
  • What note do I start on?
  • What note should I end on?
  • Are there any repeated patterns I can see right off the bat?
Complete these 5 steps for each example (the whole process should only take about 5 minutes!):
  1. Count the rhythm out loud.
  2. Analyze the piece and answer the questions above.
  3. Play through it once, without stopping for mistakes.
  4. If you missed any notes, say out loud what you need to fix (Was the rhythm right? Did I end up on the right note? Etc.)
  5. Try it one more time!
Sight-reading is just like any other skill—the more you do it, the easier it gets! Just do your best to play with confidence and keep a steady beat. It doesn't matter whether or not you play all the right notes the first time through—just by carefully going through all these steps, you're improving your sight-reading chops! :)

Theory goals

***FINISH YOUR THEORY GOALS BEFORE STARTING WORK ON YOUR PLAYING GOALS FOR THIS WEEK***

Fill in the missing letter names and finger numbers on the fingerboard chart for your instrument. Violins will be adding notes on the E string; violas will be adding notes on the C string. Once the entire chart is filled in, use it to write in any finger numbers you're unsure about in "Perpetual Motion" (you'll find the music for that under Playing Goals: Week 1)

If you don't have access to a printer at home, you can download the .pdf and "write" on it using the website linked to this assignment. Submit a picture or .pdf of your filled-out chart to show us your work!

Playing goals

***FINISH YOUR THEORY GOALS BEFORE STARTING WORK ON YOUR PLAYING GOALS FOR THIS WEEK***

Once you've finished your Theory Goals and written in fingerings for "Perpetual Motion", spend the next week and a half practicing the piece. Pay close attention to which fingers have half steps between them, and which fingers have whole steps between them. We'll ask you to play through the piece in your private lesson and help you work on any parts that are causing you trouble.

The music with "VLA" at the end of the file name is for violas; the music with "VLN" at the end of the file name is for violins. Make sure to double-check that your music has the right clef (alto or treble) before you start working!
