Private Lessons

POD SQUADs

Jumpstart Ukulele - Instructor: Aidan Evans
Sept. 14 - Oct. 2

This workshop will provide students with everything they need to start playing the ukulele! Using pop, rock, and blues music, we'll get started with the fundamental chords that allow you to play 1000s of songs. Other topics covered include fingerstyle playing, tab and note reading, as well as ukulele history and some fun ukulele videos and performances from virtuoso ukulele players. The only thing you need is a ukulele, all other materials will be provided digitally. Students will learn the basics of the ukulele, including chords, fingerpicking, and fun songs. Students will also learn about the basics of pop/rock song form, including exercises in writing their own songs. Other activities include improvisation, ear training, and fun games! At the end of the workshop, students will be able to play a song, and know the basics of writing their own.​

Entry-level ukulele. We suggest the Hua Wind Soprano Beginner Mahogany Wood Ukulele available on Amazon.

Rock Band 101- Teaching Artist: Aidan Evans
​Sept. 14 - Oct. 2

Perfect addition to advanced SoundLab students! For students experienced on one or more instruments, vocalists, or students interested in digital music production. Students will form a multi-instrumental band, and over the three-week session will compose, record, and perform 1-2 original songs. We'll explore the fundamental musical concepts that make rock and pop music so widely enjoyed. We'll cover other band-related topics like promotion, the history of the modern band, and stage presence, as well as fun activities like band shirt design and band photoshoots. Students will end the workshop in a final outdoor performance (circumstances allowing), and will leave as rockstars!  ​

Introduction to SoundLab- 
​Teaching Artist: Sally Decker

​Sept. 14 - Oct. 2

For beginners looking to explore the basics of working with sound on the computer. We will think about the sounds around us, explore sound effects and soundscapes possible on the computer, and play sound games with Chrome Music Lab and then progress to the digital audio workstation SoundTrap. We'll approach sound composition using visual, playful, and reflective methods of generation. 

Students will learn how to make drum beats, use digital instruments to make melodies and harmony, and use and transform audio samples for use in their work. By the end of the workshop, students will have made a sound composition of their own, and have the tools ready to go at home to keep exploring!

Perfect for students who have wondered what SoundLab is all about, and want to try out using electronic tools!​

Composing for Video Games and Films - Teaching Artist: Kevin Robinson

​Sept. 14 - Oct. 2 

We will study the music of various video games and animated movies to examine how they help in relaying the mood of the story of the visual images. Using online music writing sites, students will compose music for a short movie, video clips, and or video game.​

Percussion in the Park- Teaching Artist: Aidan Evans
​Every Wednesday at 2:30pm Sept. 14 - Oct. 2

Weekly in-person workshop (sign up in advance -limit 12 students), open to students of any age and skill level. Using fundamental rhythms, students will play percussion instruments, ranging from bucket drums to hand percussion. Students will start with basic rhythms, and be encouraged to improvise and compose on the spot. Music fundamentals like dynamics, technique, and tempo will all be reinforced, making this a beneficial workshop for musicians of any instrument. We will also explore rhythmic structures and instrumentation of other cultures, including Latin, African, Indian, and others.

UPCOMING Workshops

Super Ukes (Advanced Ukulele: Teaching Artist: Aidan Evans
You are ready to rock! It’s time to move up to playing some full tunes and write your own! Campers will continue to learn new strumming concepts, melodic studies, fingerpicking, chord melody, and much more. This camp is for students who have previous experience with Ukulele, and want to expand their skills. We will explore advanced chords and fingerpicking techniques, as well as songwriting. Students will, over the course of the week, compose an original song, with or without lyrics. Students will, at the end of the week, have the chance to perform their piece for their fellow campers.

Advanced SoundLab- Teaching Artist​: Sally Decker (*dates TBA)
Using the online digital audio workstation SoundTrap, this course will build upon Intro to SoundLab. Students will fine-tune their skills in electronic music and dive further into questions about composition and musical expression via the computer. This workshop will be largely based on sharing our work and giving each other feedback as a means of digging deeper. We will also go into the use of audio effects, a powerful sound design tool.

Perfect for students who have either taken Intro to SoundLab, Rock Band 101, or an electronic music production class before, looking to have more fun exploring their creativity through electronic music!​​

World Music Expedition - Teaching Artist: Misha Khalikulov​  (dates TBA)
Students will take a musical journey around the world and explore different sounds and styles of music. Guest musicians from all over the world will sit in to perform and to share their experiences.

Songwriting & Composer Workshop- Teaching Artist: Sally Decker (dates TBA)
Using the online digital audio workstation BandLab, plus any instruments students want to bring into the process, this will be a week-long workshop focused on song form and the production of original music. By the end of the week students will have written, recorded and produced a collaborative group song, with every student contributing something of their own. Students will leave this week with the tools to approach their own song ideas and execute all the primary elements of a song. Through an intensive collaborative process, they will also gain valuable experience sharing and working to bring ideas to life together. Depending on class size, we may split into small groups to work on songs as collaboratively.

Perfect for students with some experience making music on the computer, interested in advancing their songwriting and composition skills!

Applied Hand Drumming - Teaching Artist: Aidan Evans
​In this camp, students will work toward broadening their understanding of rhythm through the use of hand drums. We will explore the important role that rhythm plays in the energy and feeling of a piece of music. Together, we will learn about rhythm from many musical traditions in order to broaden our perspective. Campers will learn different pieces for hand drums and be guided in writing their own original compositions. At the end of the week, campers will have a heightened sensibility toward rhythm and new ideas for how to incorporate these techniques into their musical practice and creative pursuits.

Headphones, a small hand drum or make your own drum in class!

​Spontaneous Composition- Teaching Artist: Kevin Robinson
Students will study and learn methods to improvise, I will approach the practice as Spontaneous Composition, taking deep dives in studying composing (notation methods, etc) and other art forms like dance, art, and poetry. The class will promote the development of each student’s unique harmonic and melodic vocabulary through writing and performance. At the end of the class session, the students will produce a recording and or live performance of a Spontaneous Composition. ​
