StringLab: An innovative approach to music-makingIn September 2019, Bay Area Music Project launched StringLab, an innovative, hands-on, project-based music program at Wood Middle School. StringLab combines the study of traditional string instruments with digital music technology that engages and challenges our aspiring musicians and composers.
The goal of this program is to give music students a well-rounded and modern approach to music-making, while still helping to teach them the value of tradition and the discipline required to play an instrument. The skills that they learn will give them agency as composers, instrumentalists, and sound engineers. The group project will also teach them how to collaborate in a musical setting, creating art that is relevant and meaningful to themselves and their friends while also learning how to listen, compromise, and be open-minded. Through this training, the program hopes to build a community of well-rounded and empowered young musicians. |
