Bay Area Music Project founder Lorrie Murray receives the Spotlight on Quality Award
The annual award recognizes individuals committed to program quality improvement.
Alameda, CA — Lorrie Murray, founder and director of the Bay Area Music Project, was recently honored with the Spotlight on Quality Award from the California Department of Education's Region 4 System of Support for Expanded Learning (SSEL) programs office and Alameda County Office of Education.
SSEL functions alongside the service regions of the California County Superintendents' Educational Services Association. SSEL regions are focused on engaging students in year-round learning opportunities that prepare them for college, career, and life. Region 4 encompasses Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Solano Counties.
Murray was selected for her commitment to bringing meaningful, empowering experiences to youth in Alameda and Oakland's socio-economically and culturally diverse communities through quality music education and performance. BAMP provides children and youth in K-12 access to intensive music training, instruments, and academic support.
Murray said being honored with the Spotlight on Quality Award was humbling, and a reflection of the program’s talented team, and the strong partnerships BAMP has forged with schools, school districts, and community organizations. “No one achieves anything alone. The strength of our community is from the efforts — big and small — of hundreds of people. We're made rich by our family of dedicated, passionate teaching artists and support staff who mentor curious, creative young minds from a place of love and respect."
"It’s a great reminder that when we all scramble to define achievement or determine whether kids are being ‘successful’ in school, the metrics most often emphasized or utilized neglect the expression, creativity, and collaboration that is embedded in learning through music and many other art forms,” said Alameda Unified School District Superintendent Pasquale Scuderi. “Thank you for keeping those experiences woven into the education and development of our kids."
