Students studied the work of composer Florence Price
and how she incorporated
spirituals and black folk songs into
her compositions.  “Sinner’s Hip-Hop” was a collaboratively composed
by 40 students and 6 teaching artists. Together they discussed the
tone and mood of the piece, as well as the form and how it
could incorporate the melody of the spiritual.

From the early days

On September 26, 2015, Cal Performances hosted a seminario for Bay Area El Sistema based programs. Nine violin students from Bay Area Music Project received a rare opportunity to participate in a side by side rehearsal with members of The Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra.
Over 800 children have participated in Alameda Music Project's ambitious "music for social change" after-school program since its launch in September 2014. This video is a year in review of just some of the incredible life changing opportunities we're able to provide for them.

BAMP: An Introduction

In February 2014 we launched a pilot program at Maya Lin School, a Title 1 arts integrated magnet school in the socio-economically challenged West End of Alameda. Over 40 children enrolled in our inaugural choir.

Our First Full Year

BAMP begins its first full year of programming in September 2014 offering tuition-free music instruction in choir, beginner violin and percussion to over 60 students. The children also receive a nutritious snack and homework assistance.

A successful program depends on the integration of inspiring enrichments and academics support. We are grateful for the close collaboration with the teaching and administration staff from our host school.
